Racing without a licence: the Trimmers

"Trimmers" is the Dutch name for recreational racers. The Trimmers races are real races, usually 40 to 80 km depending on the day, for riders aged 18 and over without a KNWU racing licence (KNWU is the Dutch cycling federation). Good fitness is expected: this is racing, not a sportive. Riders aged 60 and over have their own classification within the same race.

Racing with a licence

The licence races are for men and women with a KNWU licence, aged 15 and over; the youth categories (Nieuwelingen and Jeugd) cannot start in these races. The Saturday 15:00 race is the longest-running KNWU licence criterium in the Netherlands and covers 60 to 80 km on the closed circuit. Not sure your licence is valid for our races? Email wedstrijden@wvamsterdam.nl before your first race.

Your first race

  • The Friday beginners' race is the gentlest way in. Before the start you get a 15 to 20 minute briefing on riding in a bunch, then 40 to 50 km at around 30 to 32 km/h. Challenging, but doable if you regularly ride 60 km or more.
  • Bring a road bike (no mountain bike) and a helmet, which is mandatory. Cycling shoes and clipless pedals are not required. No road bike yet? Our sponsor Bike Planet lends road bikes for your first few times.
  • After a few Fridays you can move up to the Saturday Trimmers race, or to the licence races once you have a licence.

How to enter

  • Register online via the race calendar up to an hour before the start, or at the sign-on desk in the clubhouse until half an hour before. Entry is €4, or €3 for WVA members.
  • Timing is by MyLaps chip. No chip of your own? You can hire one at the sign-on desk. Results are online right after the race.

Classics and specials
